Community Volunteer Michael Madigan Dies

Michael Patrick Madigan, an active community member in San Juan Capistrano, died Wednesday at age 79.

Madigan, the city’s 1983 Citizen of the Year, had been involved in the San Juan Capistrano Chamber of Commerce, the Emerald Society, Boy Scouts, Pop Warner football, Little League baseball and the local Kitchen Klatter Band.

He was the first president of the city’s Seniors Club and former president of Los Quadrados Square Dance Club and the local chapter of the American Assn. of Retired Persons.

Madigan also received the city’s Community Service Award in 1994 and special community participation awards from the Emeritus Council at Saddleback College and from the California Park and Recreation Department.

Madigan moved to San Juan Capistrano in 1977 after retiring from the New York City Department of Hospitals, where he had worked for 32 years.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marge; sons Bruce, Michael, Donald and Paul; daughter Nancy; his stepmother; three brothers; three sisters; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services will be at 8 a.m. today at San Felipe de Jesus Roman Catholic Church in Capistrano Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in memory of Mike Madigan to the San Juan Community Center Fund, Hot Springs Dance Hall, 32506 Paseo Adelanto, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675.
