Mexico Ruling Party Expels Raul Salinas
MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party has expelled Raul Salinas de Gortari, jailed brother of former President Carlos Salinas de Gortari, a PRI spokeswoman said Friday.
The long-ruling party has not yet decided whether to do the same to the former president, officials said.
Raul Salinas has been in a high-security prison in Mexico since last February after being arrested on charges he ordered the assassination of a top PRI politician in 1994.
The former high-living civil servant is also being investigated by Mexican and Swiss officials for allegedly laundering drug money and corruption.
Carlos Salinas, now in self-imposed exile, has denied playing any part in the alleged crimes and has said he is being used as a scapegoat by party members who want to undo his economic and political reforms.
