PACIFIC 10 ROUNDUP : Washington Tripped by Arizona State
After beating Arizona at Tucson for the first time since 1984 on Thursday night, Washington must have forgotten it has just as much trouble beating Arizona State at Tempe.
Arizona State beat Washington, 88-79, on Saturday--its 14th consecutive victory over the Huskies, who dropped to 13-5 overall and 6-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference.
Forward Ron Riley, who has been in Arizona State Coach Bill Frieder’s doghouse most of the season, had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Sun Devils (3-6, 8-9). Guard Jeremy Veal had 22 points and combined with Riley to make eight free throws in the final 2:44 that kept the Huskies from getting closer than three points.
Forward Mark Sanford had 28 points and 13 rebounds for Washington, which had its win streak ended at five games. The Huskies haven’t won in Tempe since 1988.
No. 14 Arizona 96, Washington State 78--The Wildcats (16-4, 6-3) bounced back from their second home loss this season to increase their win streak to 21 over the Cougars (9-8, 2-7)
Center Ben Davis had 20 points and 14 rebounds and kept Washington State’s best player, Mark Hendrickson, in check. Hendrickson had nine points and five rebounds, which are about half his season averages.
Arizona had a 47-30 rebounding advantage over Washington State, with 18 coming on the offensive end, after being outrebounded, 52-31, by Washington.
“Everybody realized what happened on Thursday,” said Davis. “We couldn’t let that happen again. We had to pick it up.”
The Wildcats picked it up at the outset of the second half, hitting 11 of 15 shots to take a 17-point lead with 13 minutes remaining.
Isaac Fontaine led Washington State with 21 points.
