Artwork Stolen From JFK: Port Authority police and federal officials are investigating the theft of an estimated $15 million worth of artworks from New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport late last week. The art--a painting and a drawing by Pablo Picasso and another painting by Camille Pissarro--had been left with an Aeromexico agent Thursday night at the request of U.S. Customs officials who told a Mexican businessman who was bringing the works to New York to be appraised by Christie’s and Sotheby’s auction houses that he needed additional paperwork because of the paintings’ value. Dynair, a baggage handling company, was to have transported the paintings to a holding area, but apparently did not arrange for any special security--a violation of the company’s own rules, investigators said. Dynair could not be reached for comment. When businessman Avelino Espinosa Gonzalez returned for the paintings on Friday, they were gone.
