In the early days of classical music, the word “concerto” covered a broader kind of music than it later came to define. Today the word refers to one person pitting an instrument against a large orchestra, but back then it could also involve several soloists or even one group playing in juxtaposition to another.

Masters of the form, including Handel, Bach and Stravinsky, will be represented on an upcoming concert by the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields led by Kenneth Sillito. The program is sponsored by the Philharmonic Society of Orange County.

Art

Outside of Eastern Orthodox churches, icons are rare sights in Southern California. “Theology in Color: Eastern Orthodox Iconography,” at the Cal State Fullerton East Art Gallery, presents a sampler of these traditional objects of devotion from Greece, Romania, Russia, Serbia and the United States. Fundamentally unchanged in subject matter and technique since the fourth century, the stylized paintings depict Christ, the Virgin Mary, saints and feast days.

Theater

“Voices in the Wind,” a new production by Cal State Fullerton’s Kaleidoscope Players, uses music and dance to show how history can apply to all of us.

While visiting an archeological site in the Southwest, a group of students experience social studies firsthand when their imaginations bring to life a tribe that lived on the spot thousands of years ago. Suddenly, the students are caught up in an adventure that helps them discover their individuality, commonality and connections with the past.

Family Affair

It may be hard to tell whether Saturday’s event at the Bowers Kidseum is a fund-raiser or a fun-raiser.

The party begins with hands-on activities, storytelling and games at the Kidseum. Then dancers from the St. Joseph Ballet will lead a parade to the Bowers Museum, where the International Children’s Choir will perform. The ballet troupe will present two new works, “With This Faith” and “When All God’s Children Get Together,” accompanied by the Biola University Gospel Choir. Topaz Cafe will serve a buffet as part of the event, which is sponsored by the Bowers support group Carino por el Museum. All proceeds benefit Kidseum programs.
