Joachim Hassan of Saddleback shot a school-record five-under-par 67 to help the Gauchos to an 18-shot victory Monday in the College of the Canyons golf tournament at the Valencia County Club.

Hassan, a freshman from Milan, Italy, shot the lowest score on a par-72 course in the 27-year history of the team, according to Coach Bill Cunerty.

Scott Richardson of Saddleback shot a five-under 66 on the par-71 Whispering Palms course in San Diego in 1993. The course has since changed its name to Morgan Run.

Hassan’s score was especially impressive considering that Valencia, which is nearly 6,700 yards long, is one of the most difficult courses in Southern California.

Lee Kinney, Michael McGinley and Luis Barrutieta each shot 73 and Hans Jones 76 for Saddleback, which had 362, its lowest 18-hole team total this season.

Canyons was second at 380, Bakersfield (385) third, and Ventura (392) and Hancock (392) tied for fourth.
