Norwegian Skaardal Wins Super-G as Scandinavians Dominate Event
SIERRA NEVADA, Spain — Norway’s Atle Skaardal won the men’s super-G in the World Alpine Skiing Championships on Tuesday as Scandinavians took five of the first six places.
Skaardal, a seven-time World Cup winner who won a super-G earlier this season, completed the 7,956-foot course in near-perfect conditions in 1 minute 21.80 seconds.
“I wasn’t sure how to navigate it,” Skaardal said. “But I had a super feeling in the start house and went down without a mistake.”
Sweden’s Patrik Jaerbyn finished second in 1:22.09 and Norway’s Kjetil Aamodt, the defending slalom and giant slalom champion, was third in 1:22.11.
Daron Rhalves of Clayton, Calif., was the top American, finishing 22nd in 1:23.78. Chad Fleischer of Vail, Colo., was 27th in 1:24.08.
