SIGNING OFF: Even before they formally consider it, Thousand Oaks City Council members are backing off on a proposal to put an electronic marquee outside the Civic Arts Plaza (B1). . . . “Many people in Thousand Oaks appreciate the fact that signs are limited,” said Councilwoman Jaime Zukowski. “A moving sign would be a reminder of what people got away from in Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley.”

HELLO, GOODBYE: “The Goodbye Girl,” the third in a series of four Theater League productions, is playing at the Civic Arts Plaza (F1). . . . The first two productions, “Cats” and “Les Miserables,” were near sellouts, said Betsy Degaetano, who works the box office. Although “Goodbye Girl” is nearing that status, tickets are available for the final four performances. . . . The last in the series will be “Evita” in May, starring Valerie Perri.

MILESTONE: Joe Vaughan of Buena High is the first girls’ basketball coach in the state to register 500 victories. The Ventura native’s teams have lost only 51 games in 21 seasons and enter tonight’s second-round playoff game with a 24-1 record. . . . Vaughan, 51, a wiry whirlwind of energy, might win 500 more before he retires. “If Joe won the lottery, he would still coach Buena girls’ basketball,” said Lane Jackson, who served as Vaughan’s assistant for many years.

SEED MONEY: Saticoy-based Seminis Vegetable Genetics has donated six tons of its surplus Petoseed products to a San Francisco company for distribution to vegetable-hungry Russians. . . . But the company also helps out closer to home. Kids at the Ventura Boys & Girls Club will be able to join the “Garden Club,” thanks to another donation by the company. Most of the vegetables are for salad fixings, but the children will also be growing extra-large and kid-sized “spook-tacular” pumpkins.
