La Canada Zeroing In on Another Championship, 4-0

Defending champion La Canada High eased past Workman, 4-0, in the first round of the Southern Section Division IV soccer playoffs Friday at La Canada.

The top-seeded Spartans (21-0) set a Southern Section record by scoring their 130th goal of the season.

Nick Andrus scored two goals for La Canada, which has won 46 consecutive games.

In other first-round games:

DIVISION I

Westlake 2, Edison 1--Jeremy Wessely scored on a rebound a minute into the second half, breaking a 1-1 tie for the Warriors (18-1-2) at Westlake.

DIVISION II

Buena 8, Baldwin Park 0--Dave Jones had two goals and two assists for the Bulldogs (15-4-2) at Buena.

Mike Bradbury and Kevin White each had two goals for the Bulldogs, who had a 6-0 lead by halftime.

San Marcos 4, Burroughs 0--The Royals (17-5-3) coasted past the Indians (12-9-3) at San Marcos.

Bell Gardens 3, Hart 0--Osvaldo Convarrubias, Miguel Roldan and Jeronimo Olivera each had a goal for the Lancers (14-4-3) at Bell Gardens.

Alexei Dmitriew had five saves and German Pernisco, who took over in the second half, had one for the Indians (9-10-3).

DIVISION III

St. Francis 3, Pioneer 0--Kris Cash scored two goals and Pete Vagenas had one as the Knights (19-3-2) won at home.

The Knights held the Titans (8-8-1) to four shots and goalkeeper Andy Rojas had two saves to record his 10th shutout of the season.

Arroyo Grande 2, Harvard-Westlake 0--Martin Leon and Kelly Dodds scored as the Eagles (19-4-3) downed the Wolverines (13-8-3).

Palmdale 2, Whittier 0--Merrick Henry and Kim Britton scored for the Falcons (21-3-3).

DIVISION IV

Santa Paula 1, Arroyo 0--Gabriel Villa took Javier Rodrigues’ pass and headed the ball into the left corner of the goal with two minutes left in the second overtime for the third-seeded Cardinals (21-2).

DIVISION V

Village Christian 3, Western Christian 1--Tony Yousif scored in the first half, and Jason Ibaceta and Dennis Lopez scored in the second for the Crusaders (12-6-5) at Western Christian.

Aquinas 2, Paraclete 0--Matt Magana and Nicholas Montag scored for the Falcons at Aquinas.

The Spirits (10-12-1) had nine shots on goal and Joey Lydon made three saves.

Oak Park 2, Bosco Tech 0--Collin McDonnell scored at the 30th minute of the first half and Michael Chen added a goal in the second half for the Eagles (18-1-2) at Oak Park.

Gus Ramirez had 20 saves for the Tigers (11-8-3).

GIRLS

Torrance 4, Thousand Oaks 2--The Marmonte League-winning Lancers (19-3-1) got goals from Alia Khan and Susan Shivokevich, but lost in overtime to Torrance in the Division I game. Jennifer Espinoza had 11 saves for Thousand Oaks.

The Tartars ended up going into the playoffs as a third-place team because of late-season forfeits.

CITY SECTION

Banning 4, San Fernando 1--The top-seeded Pilots (11-0-4) scored two second-half goals in a two-minute span of a boys’ game to break a scoreless tie at Banning.

Oscar Rodriguez pulled the Tigers (5-8-2) to within 2-1, but Banning blew the game open in the last 15 minutes with two more goals.

Birmingham 2, Venice 0--Jose Rivas scored both goals for the Braves (10-4-3) at Birmingham.

Elmer Barada passed to Rivas at midfield 35 minutes into the first half on the first goal. The other came when Rivas drove down the middle past five defenders to score in the second half.

Sylmar 6, Kennedy 1--Carlos Cabrera scored three goals and Ivan Campos, Ranferi Benitez and William Acuchi each added one for the third-seeded Spartans (14-1-3) at Sylmar.

Scott Ko scored for the Golden Cougars.

Chatsworth 1, North Hollywood 0--The 12th-seeded Chancellors (10-8-4) won a shootout, 5-4, over the 21st-seeded Huskies at Chatsworth.

The Chancellors played the second half and the overtime without top scorer Michael Preis, who was red-carded in the 32nd minute after colliding with the North Hollywood goalie.

Cleveland 6, Narbonne 1--Six players scored for the Cavaliers (12-2-5) and Oscar Garcia made six saves at Narbonne.

El Camino Real 3, Palisades 1--Jon Terry scored a pair of goals in the second overtime as the Conquistadores (11-8-3) rallied with three consecutive goals at Palisades.

Reseda 4, Jefferson 3--The Regents (9-3-3) outscored Jefferson, 3-2, in the second round of penalty kicks to win a shootout following overtime at Reseda.

Oscar Sims had two goals and William Diaz added one for the Regents.

Sherman Oaks CES 3, Washington 2--David Campos had two goals, including the winning score in overtime, and assisted on Rudy Zermeno’s goal for Sherman Oaks CES (10-0-2).

Hollywood 5, Van Nuys 1--The Wolves (5-7-6) were routed by the Sheiks at Hollywood.

GIRLS

Kennedy 6, Venice 0--Nikki Hagouel and Nicole Goldberg each scored three goals for the top-ranked Golden Cougars (13-6-3).in a 3-A Division game at Kennedy

Sendy Monroy assisted on two of Hagouel’s goals, and Angelique Fontes had seven saves for Kennedy.
