Kotsay Homers Again, Titans Win

Mark Kotsay homered for the sixth time in five games and Kirk Irvine pitched a complete game as Cal State Fullerton won the opener of a three-game series against Arizona, 6-2, Friday night at Titan Field.

Kotsay, who also tripled, went three for four with two runs batted in and three runs scored for the Titans (7-1), who had 15 hits to extend their winning streak to seven games.

Irvine (2-1) gave up seven hits and struck out nine for his first complete game as a Titan.

Fullerton’s Jerome Alviso was three for three with an RBI.

In nonconference baseball:

Long Beach State 5, Washington 2--Casey Snow went three for three with two doubles and an RBI for host Long Beach State (3-5) in the first of a three-game series. Rocky Biddle gave up three hits and struck out 12 for the victory.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Christian Heritage 67, Chapman 65--Jim Falletta’s 18-footer at the buzzer hit the front of the rim and bounced away and Chapman (13-11) lost at home. Christian Heritage (11-15) trailed by as many as 18 in the second half, but rallied behind Beau Sager (21 points) and Chad Bickley (19 points).

In Big West Conference women’s basketball:

New Mexico State 76, Cal State Fullerton 75--New Mexico State’s Shrae Johnson made two free throws with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Aggies (15-9, 10-4).

Shayla Bradshaw led Cal State Fullerton (5-17, 2-11) with 23 points and Justine McMahan had 18. Anita Maxwell led New Mexico State with 33 points.

UC Irvine 65, UNLV 60--Leticia Oseguera had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Allah-mi Basheer added 12 points for UC Irvine (10-12, 5-8), which stopped a four-game losing streak.

Long Beach State 89, San Jose State 87 (OT)--Ja’net Davis had 24 points and 16 rebounds and Kim Barfield had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the 49ers (13-10, 8-6).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Concordia 75, The Master’s 56--Audre Moss scored 16 points and Melissa Ridge scored 15 for the host Eagles (21-7).

In women’s gymnastics:

Cal State Fullerton 191.7, UC Santa Barbara 184.175--Cristi Clifford won the all-around with a score of 38.9 to lead the Titans at Santa Barbara. Heather Fritzsche won the uneven bars (9.775) for Fullerton, and teammate Natalie Meyer won the floor exercise (9.725).

In nonconference men’s tennis:

Chapman 9, La Verne 0--James Baker won at singles, 6-0, 6-1, and Kevin Hill won, 6-0, 6-0, for Chapman (2-2).

Pepperdine 7, UC Irvine 0--Cameron Lindee and Steve Tallakson of UC Irvine teamed to defeat Simon Aspelin and Michael Jessup at No. 2 doubles, but Pepperdine, ranked No. 7 nationally, won its 37th consecutive home match.

In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s volleyball:

Pacific 3, UC Irvine 0--Jon Habben had 18 kills and seven digs and Evan Alexander had 15 kills and seven digs for UC Irvine (6-6, 2-6). Greg Wakeham had 33 kills to lead Pacific (7-2, 4-2).
