Shepard Gets Cougars Into Quarterfinals
Randy Shepard made a 10-foot jumper as time expired to give visiting Capistrano Valley a 70-68 victory over host Ventura Buena in a second-round Southern Section Division I-A boys’ basketball playoff game Tuesday.
Shepard had 22 points and Austin Moherman added 19 for the Cougars (17-12), who advanced to play Glendora, a 72-70 winner over Los Angeles Loyola, in the quarterfinals Friday.
Ceneka Shaw scored 16 points for Buena (16-10), which rallied from a six-point deficit with two minutes remaining.
In other Division I-A games:
El Toro 49, Newhall Hart 46--Travis Senik made four consecutive free throws in the final minute of the game to aid El Toro (16-12). Mark Wulfemeyer scored 18 points for the Chargers.
El Toro plays Riverside Poly in the quarterfinals Friday.
Mater Dei 70, San Bernardino Cajon 53--Kevin Augustine and Mike Vukovich scored 25 points each for top-seeded and visiting Mater Dei (29-1), which has won 29 in a row. Mater Dei plays Rowland in the quarterfinals.
Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 83, Westminster 79--Westminster (13-15) trailed, 80-79, but missed three shots in the final 30 seconds. Canyon Springs (21-8) held on by making 12 of 19 free throws in the fourth quarter. Brandon Fox scored 28 points and Scott Yoshizaki added 17 for Westminster.
In Division I-AA:
Upland 57, Los Alamitos 54--Los Alamitos missed a pair of three-point shots in the final seven seconds. A.D. Lamoureux had 14 points and Chris Glass added 11 points and seven assists for Los Alamitos (20-7).
Esperanza 74, Glendale Hoover 62--Matt Munson scored a career-high 21 points for second-seeded Esperanza (25-3), which will play Palos Verdes Peninsula in the next round.
In Division III-A:
San Dimas 68, Corona del Mar 50--Second-seeded San Dimas (26-1) scored eight consecutive points to begin the game and led, 35-18, at halftime in a quarterfinal game at Estancia High. Brian Coleman had 19 points and six assists for Corona del Mar (17-11).
Duarte 71, Estancia 56--Dane Plock scored 18 points, including four three-pointers, and Chris Candlish had 15 for Estancia (23-5), which fell behind by 11 after the opening quarter.
In Division IV-A:
Calvary Chapel 77, North Hills Los Angeles Baptist 67--Trailing fourth-seeded L.A. Baptist by eight points midway through the third quarter, Calvary Chapel (23-4) went on a 22-4 run to take control.
Robert Cutler scored eight of his 10 points in the third quarter for the Eagles, who advanced to Friday’s semifinals to play top-seeded Los Angeles Crossroads.
Los Angeles Verbum Dei 73, Orange Lutheran 67--Kyle Salyer scored 23 points and Jason Kemner added 22 for host Orange Lutheran (12-13), which closed within six by scoring 31 points in the fourth quarter. Third-seeded Verbum Dei (16-9) made nine of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter.
In Division V-AA:
Riverside Woodcrest Christian 61, St. Margaret’s 50--Woodcrest Christian (18-9) in the second half. Rob Miltner scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Todd Shriber had 14 points and 10 rebounds for St. Margaret’s (10-14).
In Division V-A:
Heritage Christian 58, Los Angeles Shalhevet 57--Jim Findlater scored 23 points and Jared Zielinski had 18 for Heritage Christian (18-8).
