Ninth-Hour Win for Pepperdine, 4-3

Freshman pinch-hitter David Sugden drove in Josh Oder with a one-out sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give Pepperdine a 4-3 nonconference victory over Washington State Friday.

Oder scored in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by Dennis Twombley. Sugden was pinch-hitting for Twombley when he drove in the winning run.

John Workman (2-2) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Randy Wolf for the Waves (6-8).

Wolf struck out nine and walked two, allowing two earned runs, but gave way to Workman after facing two batters in the eighth and allowing an unearned run that tied the game, 3-3.

Rob Ryan had three hits--including a double--and stole a base for the Cougars (5-10).

Cal Lutheran 5, Redlands 3--Mike Young’s solo home run in the sixth inning provided an insurance run for Cal Lutheran (7-3-1, 4-0) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Redlands.

Richard Bell (2-0) struck out six for the Kingsmen, walked three and gave up six hits. Freshman Erik Kiszczak pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings to record his first save.

Robert Nichols led off the game with a home run and the Kingsmen scored again in the second and third innings.

Russell Williams and Justin Ott each had two hits for Redlands.

Point Loma 8, The Master’s 5--The Crusaders scored two runs without benefit of a hit to break a 5-5 tie in the sixth by taking advantage of two walks and three Mustang errors in a nonconference game at Point Loma.

Eric Kowes had a two-run single and Jeff Bennett hit a solo home run for the Mustangs (4-7-1).

Valley 8, Cerro Coso 7--Adrian Perez hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth to give the Monarchs a nonconference victory at Valley.

Javier Dorado had a single, a double and three runs batted in for Valley (3-9).

Doug Neal was two for three, including a triple and a home run, and had two RBIs for Cerro Coso.

Harbor 10, Oxnard 4--Oxnard’s Jake Spahr had two hits--including a home run--and three RBIs in a losing effort at Harbor.

Raudel Flores had three hits and stole three bases for Oxnard.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Moorpark 65, Southwestern 62--Corey Phillips scored 16 points, and Tricia Palmquist and Theresa Rough each added 14 for the Raiders (12-16) in a Southern California Regional playoff victory at Southwestern.

Hancock 81, Glendale 68--Anna Williams had 21 points, three rebounds, three assists and four steals for the Bulldogs (15-14) in a Southern California Regional first-round game at Hancock.

Lindsay Ball added 20 points and 16 rebounds.

Minnie Caluag scored 23 points and Heather Green added 17 for the Gauchos (9-19).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pepperdine d. UC Santa Barbara, 15-12, 15-10, 15-12--Kevin Barnett had 19 kills and George Roumain added 18 for Pepperdine (7-5, 2-4) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Santa Barbara.

Colin Wellman had 47 assists for the Waves.

Jeremy Darner led Santa Barbara with 15 kills and Todd Rogers had 42 assists.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

CS Northridge 5, San Francisco 4--Amy Petersen and Josie Hendrick won the singles matches and combined for a doubles victory to give the Matadors three of their five points in the nonconference victory at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Petersen defeated Rori Hewett, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2 singles, while Hendrick needed three sets to dispatch Melinda Schvetz at No. 3 singles, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.

Hendrick and Petersen teamed at No. 2 doubles to defeat Schvetz and Nancy Bach, 7-6, 7-6.

SOFTBALL

Cal Lutheran 13-29, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 3-0--Pitcher Heidi Stevens, who allowed only one earned run, hit a three-run home run in the first inning of the nightcap for the Regals (4-0, 2-0) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

Earlier, Gina Delianedis (1-0) pitched a no-hitter, missing a perfect game with one walk.

Stevens also hit a three-run homer in the first inning of the opener.
