Claremont Defeats Cal Lutheran to Gain Automatic NCAA Berth, SCIAC Title
The Cal Lutheran women’s basketball team lost a one-game playoff to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 62-48, for the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title on Saturday at Claremont.
The teams came into the game tied for the conference title with 9-3 records.
Nicole Albert scored 11 points, but the Regals (13-13) shot 34% from the floor. Dianna Turner scored 21 points and Mindy Bagatelos added 17 for the Athenas (19-7), who qualify for the NCAA Division III playoffs.
CS Sacramento 80, CS Northridge 75--The Matadors (5-21, 1-5) were close for most of the American West Conference game until a 7-0 run gave the Hornets (9-17, 3-3) a lead they would not relinquish with 3:46 to play. Northridge finished last in the AWC.
Pepperdine 63, San Diego 60--Lisa Siders scored 15 points and Beatrice Godoy added 13 for the visiting Waves (14-12, 7-7) in a West Coast Conference game.
BASEBALL
Pepperdine 5, Washington State 3--David Matranga drove in two runs for the Waves (7-8), who completed a three-game nonconference sweep of the Cougars (5-11) at Pepperdine.
Greg Gregory (2-2) pitched 6 2/3 innings, and Eric Brubaker allowed one hit the rest of the way for his second save.
The Master’s 10, UC San Diego 6--A two-run home run by Jason Freeman in the fifth inning led Masters (5-7-1) to a nonconference victory at San Diego.
The Mustangs’ Dan Prentice and Matt Huter each drove in two runs to open up a 6-2 lead over the Tritons (2-8-1) in the fourth. In the fifth, back-to-back doubles by Justin and Bryan Miller and Freeman’s home run added three runs.
Cal Lutheran 5-8, Redlands 1-2--The host Kingsmen (9-3-1, 6-0) remained undefeated in SCIAC play with a sweep of Redlands (4-10-1).
Harbor 13, Canyons 8--A five-run onslaught by Harbor (8-4) helped give the Seahawks a nonconference victory over the host Cougars (3-9). After Canyons jumped to a 5-2 lead, three Harbor home runs in the fifth inning gave the Seahawks a 7-5 edge.
Harbor’s Jose Niebla hit a three-run home run in the eighth to seal the victory. win. Gabby Halcovich had a two-run home run in the second and Luis Sanchez had a solo home run in the third for Canyons.
Pierce 6, San Diego City 3--Carlos Nunez had four hits and four RBIs, and Dave Supple had four RBIs for the Brahmas (8-4) in two games at the Grossmont tournament.
Pierce dropped its second game to Citrus, 9-5. The game was called because of darkness after seven innings.
TRACK
Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Meet--Cal State Northridge’s Beth Burton won the 20-pound weight throw with a heave of 56 feet 7 inches, and also placed second in the shot put with a distance of 46 feet 11 1/2 inches to lead the Matador women to a ninth-place finish at the 14-team meet in Nevada.
James Lincoln led the Matador men, taking third-place in the high jump by clearing 6 feet 10 1/4 inches. Northridge, which finished 10th in the men’s standings, also placed second in the men’s 4 x 400-meter relay (3:17.31).
