Proposed Fee Hikes to Get More Study

A proposal to increase city fees has run into resistance from the City Council.

Assistant City Manager Brigitte Charles had requested that fees be updated to reflect increased costs. But council members voted last week to defer action until March, saying they want to give the plan more study.

“I’m extremely concerned about increasing fees for business licenses,” Councilman Kenneth Blake said. “If at all possible, we should retain the current fees.”

The list calls for raising the $30 cost of renewing a business license to $52. A home business license would go from $40 to $60.

Charles said that city policy has long been to charge users for the cost of city services.

“The user-fee schedule has not been revised since July 1, 1994,” she said. The proposed increases would “reflect the cost of delivering the specific services.”
