South Bay : BUS SERVICE

Bus service through downtown Wilmington is available for the first time since city officials promised to improve transportation in the city more than 10 years ago.

The addition of the Department of Transportation’s Downtown Area Short Hop (DASH) shuttle bus was approved by the City Council last year and services began Monday, Harbor district Councilman Rudy Svorinich said. The city spent $110,000 to start the service and costs will increase just slightly over the next few years.

According to Svorinich, the much-needed service is filling a transportation gap for Wilmington residents because city bus service makes few stops in the downtown corridor.

“There are so many people in Wilmington who are public transportation dependent,” Svorinich said. “I’m so glad we were able to provide this service to people who need it so much.”

The city is running a 16-passenger bus from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and has another bus that will serve as backup. The bus makes 13 stops and costs 25 cents. Rides are free for children under 4, students and senior citizens who have an MTA pass.
