Lack of Support Forces Cancellation of Irish Fair
For the second year in a row, the city will not be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.
Denny Spargo, president of the Mission Viejo Activities Committee, reported to the City Council this week that, because of weak public support, the St. Patrick’s Day Irish Fair has been canceled.
Spargo said that, despite months of promotion and solicitation among community businesses, only a few food and craft vendors had signed up. There was also little public interest in other activities, such as an Irish stew cook-off and a parade, he said.
“There were only 17 parade entries, and we were hoping for more like 100,” Spargo said. “The bottom line was, the parade would have lasted about 20 minutes.”
The activities committee will now concentrate on the city’s Fourth of July activities, Spargo said.
