Orange Coast Rallies to Top Golden West in Volleyball
Orange Coast joined Golden West atop the Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball standings by edging the Rustlers in five games Wednesday night at Golden West College.
The Pirates defeated the defending state champions by rallying to win, 15-9, 16-17, 10-15, 15-13, 15-10.
Sophomore Troy Langley had 20 kills, including four in the final game to lead Orange Coast (6-1, 4-1). Kevin Reid and Mike Pixler each added 15 kills for the Pirates.
Curtis Jackson had a match-high 28 kills and Jeff Carlucci added 24 kills and John Davies had 20 for Golden West (5-1, 4-1).
In nonconference golf:
Orange Coast 382, Cerritos 419, Golden West 430--Eric Barnett of Orange Coast shared medalist honors with Sam Vance of Cerritos, shooting three-over 74 at Rio Hondo.
Rancho Santiago 386, Mt. San Antonio 397, Pasadena City 403--Rene Mendez shot two-over 74 for Rancho Santiago (4-1) at Los Serranos. Medalists Tyson Roberts of Mt. SAC and John Nacey of Pasadena City each shot one-over 73.
In Orange Empire Conference softball:
Cypress 10, Rancho Santiago 5 (5, mercy)--Christa Saindon had two doubles and four RBIs and Aimee Weathers had a double and three RBIs for host Cypress (9-4, 1-0) in a 10-run second inning. Rancho Santiago is 5-7-1, 0-1.
Fullerton 8, Orange Coast 0 (5, mercy)--Deborah Hargrave had two hits and two runs scored and Kristy Bonwell pitched a one-hitter with five strikeouts for host Fullerton (13-2, 1-0). Orange Coast is 2-7, 0-1.
Saddleback 6, Riverside 0--Windy Scofield struck out three and pitched a seven-hitter in the conference opener for both teams. Catcher Christina Loya went two for three with three runs batted in for the Gauchos (8-2, 1-0).
In Orange Empire Conference women’s tennis:
Irvine Valley 5, Cypress 2--Jill Riley was perfect at No. 3 singles for Irvine Valley (5-1, 3-1), defeating Cypress’ Jackie Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0. Jessica Lubman of Cypress defeated Natalie Nowzari at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
In Orange Empire Conference men’s volleyball:
Grossmont 3, Irvine Valley 1--Beau Bianchi had 21 kills, but Irvine Valley remained winless, 15-4, 13-15, 13-15, 4-15. Jeremy Beck and Hava Davis each added 12 kills for the Lasers (0-4, 0-4).
