Hitchhiking Is Illegal in California

Re Robin Abcarian’s column “Living on a Thumb and a Prayer” (Mar. 3): With the recent publicity of William Bonin’s execution, I find it disturbing that your paper is responsible for misinformation, and even the glamorization, over hitchhiking.
Although Abcarian rhetorically asks, “What kind of idiot hitchhikes nowadays?” she continues by stating, “It is not, after all, illegal to stick your thumb to get from here to there.”
California Vehicle Code SS21957, enacted in 1959 and still on the books, makes just such conduct illegal.
