Inglewood District Adopts Mandatory School Dress Code

The Inglewood Unified School District has approved a mandatory school uniform policy that makes the troubled district the first in the South Bay to impose a dress code.

In September, students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade will be required to wear a uniform. Skorts, skirts, shorts, pants, sweaters and shirts will be available in blue and white ensembles.

District officials say they have instituted the dress code to cut down on peer pressure to wear popular styles of clothing and because studies show that students who wear uniforms often perform better.

“Wearing the uniforms will make it easier for everyone to focus on learning because everyone will be wearing the same thing,” said Yvette Mayhorn-Smith, principal at Worthington Elementary School.

Mayhorn-Smith said many students already wear uniforms since the district has had a voluntary uniform policy for the past year.
