The driver of a dump truck was ejected and crushed to death Tuesday morning when he attempted to make a sharp turn on a freeway offramp and lost control of the vehicle, officials said.

The 40-year-old Inglewood man, whose name was withheld pending notification of his family, was traveling at about 45 mph on the Penrose Street offramp to the southbound Golden State Freeway, where the posted speed limit is 15 mph, said California Highway Patrol Officer Gretchen Jacobs.

Witnesses told CHP officials that when the truck, which weighed an estimated 6 tons, entered a curve, the driver lost control and the truck flipped over. The man, who was not wearing a safety belt, was thrown from the cab onto the road shoulder, where he was crushed by the truck.
