After playing the longest nine-inning game in the history of the major leagues the night before, New York and Baltimore played even longer Wednesday night, but at least they had an excuse:

Six extra innings.

Tino Martinez’s grand slam in the 15th inning at Baltimore broke a 6-6 tie and Gerald Williams’ sixth hit of the game drove in another run to give the Yankees an 11-6 victory and a sweep of a two-game series.

It took five hours 34 minutes, an hour 23 minutes and six innings longer than on Tuesday.

Wade Boggs opened the 15th inning with a single off Kent Mercker (2-2). Derek Jeter tried to bunt but was hit by a pitch. Jimmy Myers relieved and got Paul O’Neill to ground out, advancing the runners.

After an intentional walk to Ruben Sierra, Martinez hit the first pitch from Myers into the left-field seats.

The teams combined for seven intentional walks, tying an AL record set in 1972 in a 22-inning game between Minnesota and Milwaukee.

Andy Pettitte (4-1), who started Tuesday’s game and gave up eight earned runs in one-plus inning, pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the victory.

Boston 5, Detroit 1--Roger Clemens, off to the worst start of his career, struck out 13 Tigers at Boston for his first victory of the season.

Clemens (1-4) pitched a six-hitter for the Red Sox and has struck out 10 or more 62 times.

Cleveland 9, Chicago 5--Albert Belle and Omar Vizquel homered for the Indians in support of Jack McDowell (3-1), who was facing his former White Sox teammates for the first time since they beat him and the New York Yankees, 11-4, last July 18. McDowell was booed by the Yankee Stadium crowd when he left that game in the fifth inning and responded with an obscene gesture.

This time, he gave up five runs and 10 hits in seven-plus innings.

Minnesota 6, Kansas City 5--Reliever Jeff Montgomery hit Paul Molitor with a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th inning at Minneapolis, giving the Twins a victory.

Rich Becker drew a one-out walk, Chuck Knoblauch walked and pinch-hitter Chip Hale loaded the bases with an infield hit. Montgomery then hit Molitor.

Texas 5, Seattle 4--Will Clark homered in the seventh inning at Arlington, Texas, to give the Rangers a victory in a game in which Mariner pitcher Randy Johnson, bothered by tightness in his right calf, lasted only two innings, giving up six hits and four runs.

Toronto 9, Milwaukee 3--Juan Guzman (4-1) pitched four-hit ball for eight innings for the Blue Jays, who won at home.
