Tustin Still Reigns as Track Champion in Golden West

The Tustin boys’ track team remains the Golden West League’s only champion, as the Tillers rolled at the league finals Wednesday at Rancho Santiago College.

“Today was a fun meet,” Tillers Coach Shad Vickers said. “It’s what we all worked for and I hope we can carry it through [to next week’s Southern Section preliminaries].”

Led by junior Dominique DeGrammont, who won four events, the Tillers ran past runner-up Servite, 199-108, for their second consecutive league finals victory.

The victory also helped the Tillers, who lost a dual to Westminster in 1995, rebound from an eight-point league dual-meet loss to the Friars in April.

“We brought our guys along really slowly,” Vickers said. “We built a big base and they are all peaking at the end of the season.”

DeGrammont opened the meet with a come-from-behind victory in the 400-meter relay, taking first in 43.73 seconds.

DeGrammont then defeated Servite senior John Hall in the 110 high hurdles, breaking the league record with his 14.14 finish. Hall was timed in a personal best 14.81.

DeGrammont then edged Servite standout Mike Garko by .02 to win the 100 in 11.16. He also took first in the 300 intermediate hurdles, finishing in 39.90.

“I was just trying to win four today,” DeGrammont said. “We always have a good competition [with Servite], so I knew it would be hard.”

The Tillers secured the victory with wins by DeShaun Foster (200 and triple jump), Mike Gavar (3,200), Miguel Rugley (400) and Mike Watson (high jump).

Servite remained close thanks to a double victory from Terry Nelson, who won the 800 (1:59.62) and 1,600 (4:25.28). Both times were personal bests for Nelson, a senior.

In the girls’ competition, Saddleback won the team title, compiling 125 points to beat Santa Ana (81).

Kelly Langi won the shotput (37 feet 2 1/2 inches) and discus (109-0) for the Roadrunners.

Westminster sprinter Roxanne Packard won the 100 (12.74) and 200 (26.48).
