Wolf Bears Down, Beats San Diego on Five-Hitter

Having to face Pepperdine’s Randy Wolf on an ordinary day is a tough task. Having to face him when he is on his game can be downright unbearable.

On Friday, University of San Diego hitters were consumed by an uncomfortable feeling.

Wolf struck out 13, walked none and held San Diego to five hits in Pepperdine’s 7-1 victory.

Wolf (6-3) didn’t allow the Toreros a hit until the fifth inning, when Karl Schmidt lined a single to center.

By then the Waves (29-19, 16-6 in conference play) held a 3-0 lead, and they went on to climb over San Diego into second place in the West Coast Conference by one-half game.

The schools will play a doubleheader today.

Wolf lost his shutout in the sixth when Jeff Powers doubled and scored on a double by pinch-hitter David Wright with two out.

The top of the Waves’ lineup had considerable success against the Toreros’ pitching staff.

Dennis Konrady, David Rosato and David Matranga each had two hits and combined to score four runs.

Rosato and Matranga each added a run batted in.
