Council Awards Funds to Help the Disabled
People in wheelchairs will gain access to the city’s nature trail, and the Fire Department will get an air compression system, both projects to be funded by federal grants approved by the City Council on Tuesday.
The city will have about $556,000 in Community Development Block for fiscal 1996-97, according to officials.
Other projects benefiting the city’s disabled residents will be an automatic door opener for council chambers and wheelchair-accessible play equipment at a neighborhood park.
Jeff Clemens, housing coordinator, said the city expects to receive about $206,000 in new grants. The rest of the money in the budget has been carried over from previous years or generated by existing programs.
Clemens said programs that have been funded in the past and will be maintained are housing rehabilitation, code enforcement, neighborhood revitalization and public service projects.
The city received applications from 15 agencies for public service grants. Of those, eight agencies were awarded grants totaling $30,900.
