Anti-Chewing Tobacco Campaign Planned

A campaign to teach young baseball players that their sport does not have to be linked to chewing tobacco is to begin this summer.

The campaign will premiere July 5-9 during festivities leading to the All-Star Game in Philadelphia.

Len Dykstra of the Philadelphia Phillies, Mo Vaughn of the Boston Red Sox, broadcaster Joe Garagiola and Phillie trainer Jeff Cooper are among those who will participate in the campaign.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation--the nation’s largest philanthropy devoted to health and health care--has awarded a $767,000 grant to sponsor Oral Health America, America’s Fund for Dental Health.

Cincinnati pitcher Jose Rijo visited his teammates over the weekend and played catch at Riverfront Stadium for the first time since his latest round of surgery on his pitching elbow April 8, when he had scar tissue and calcium buildup removed. Rijo hopes to get clearance to begin throwing off a mound this week. . . . The Boston Red Sox are 12-23, but still some 10,000 fans turned out in a show of support on Monday for the team’s second annual Fan Festival. The Red Sox open a nine-game homestand against the Angels tonight.
