Kids Jump at Chance to Help Heart Assn.
Students at Calvert Street Elementary School jumped rope Tuesday to raise money for the American Heart Assn.
Sponsors had pledged a set amount of money for each time the students’ feet left the ground.
Kimberly Amaya, 11, a fifth-grader at the school, said she was happy to help the cause. The issue hits home, she said, because a family member has heart trouble.
“This is sending money to people who need it,” she said.
The 340 students spent about a month practicing for the event, said Rochell Rivlin-Hollis, Calvert’s principal. The activity was also designed to encourage students to stay physically fit, she said.
No goals were set as to how much money the students would raise, said Carolyn Akin-Myers, a second-grade teacher at the school.
“We just said to the kids, ‘See what you can do,’ ” Akin-Myers said.
Officials of the Woodland Hills school said they would have a total on Thursday.
