Saugus’ Wild Card Is an Ace, 8-2
Derek Lyons (5-3) pitched a two-hitter, struck out four, walked one and allowed one unearned run, as Saugus High (18-9) defeated Burroughs Ridgecrest, 8-2, in a Division III wild-card game Tuesday at Saugus.
Brent Pellico had four hits, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Centurions, who had 11 hits.
Saugus plays at second-seed Laguna Hills Friday.
Kennedy 7, Birmingham 0--Jon Garland and Aldo Pinto combined on a two-hitter for the Golden Cougars (27-3, 17-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Birmingham.
Garland allowed one hit in five innings, striking out eight and walking two.
Poly 7, Sylmar 1--Travis McGivern had two hits and drove in a run, and Abel Salazar added a two-run single for the Parrots (24-5, 16-1), who handed the Spartans (18-7, 13-4) their fourth loss in five Valley Pac-8 Conference games at Sylmar.
Buckley 12, Milken Community 2--Four pitchers combined to throw a one-hitter for the Griffins (11-4) in a Division VI wild-card game at Buckley.
Coutin 16, Pilgrim 9--Garfield Whitman had two doubles and two triples for the Knights (12-5) in a Division VI wild-card game at Griffith Park.
BOYS’ TENNIS
Rio Mesa 10, Royal 8--Twins Mike and Bob Bryan, members of the U.S. Junior National team and the nation’s No. 1 ranked doubles team in the 18-and-under age group, helped the Spartans (17-4) upset Marmonte League co-champion Royal in a first-round, Division I match at Rio Mesa.
Bob Bryan swept three sets at No. 1 singles, including a 6-3 victory over Nick Varvais, one of the top 18-and-under players in Southern California.
Mike Bryan and Derrick Goldie swept at No. 3 doubles.
Agoura 11, North Torrance 7--The Chargers (10-5), a wild-card entry in the playoffs, knocked off the Bay League’s second-place representative behind the singles play of Dillon Ruby and Bryan Leiker, who both of swept their three matches.
Cate 17, Saugus 1--Eric Hong, Todd Phillips and Dong Kim swept their singles’ matches for the Rams (17-2) in a Division III first round playoff match at Cate.
Campbell Hall 16, Whittier 2--Freshman singles player Shaunt Vanerian lost just one game as he swept three sets for the Vikings (12-5) in a Division III first-round match at Whittier.
Camarillo 12, Buena 6--The Scorpions’ (16-3) singles and doubles teams each won two of three sets in a Division I first round match at Camarillo. Zafar Fisher swept three singles sets for the Bulldogs.
Hoover 15, Fullerton 3--Danny Kim and Galeh Karapetian each swept three sets at Nos. 1 and 2 singles, losing only two games each, as the Tornadoes (14-1) advanced past the first round of the Division II playoffs.
