Newest Lookout at Mt. St. Helens
The latest in a mini-boom of visitors centers on Washington’s once-devastated Mt. St. Helens is being dedicated this weekend, the 16th anniversary of the mountain’s eruption on May 18, 1980. The Hoffstadt Bluffs Visitor Center is located 27 miles east of Interstate 5 on Washington 504 (also known as Spirit Lake Memorial Highway). The new center--fourth in the area--will be open daily. Admission is free.
The facility overlooks the volcano and the Toutle River Valley, and from mid-May through mid-September will offer helicopter tours of the center of the crater. Tour prices start at $69 per person. Other facilities include a restaurant and shop. Information: (360) 577-3137.
