LAPD Opens 60-Officer Substation in Chinatown

Chinatown residents and business owners on Monday celebrated the dedication of a new Los Angeles Police Department substation.

Located at 823 N. Hill St., it serves as the headquarters for 60 officers in the Central Division, said Lt. Steven Brock, who is in charge of the substation. In addition to Chinatown, the officers are assigned to patrol Olvera Street, the Civic Center, Jewelry district and the downtown business district, Brock said.

The substation is housed in a building owned by the Chinatown Public Safety Assn., a nonprofit anti-crime organization.

Translators who speak several Chinese dialects will be on hand or on call to serve non-English-speaking community members.

“The idea is to get closer to the community, to be more accessible and more user-friendly, not necessarily a place where just the bad people go,” Brock said.

Members of the Public Safety Assn. have been working in conjunction with police to help rid the streets of panhandlers and vagrants.
