Bank’s Customers Billionaires for Day
First Chicago NBD Corp. made hundreds of customers near-billionaires for a day.
Last week, the sixth-largest U.S. bank deposited $924.84 million into the checking accounts of 826 customers after some software in one of its computer systems went awry, spokesman Thomas Kelly said.
A few hours later, the bank caught the error after several customers reported the mysterious jump in their balances.
Few of the Chicago-based bank’s customers tried to withdraw the funds, Kelly said. “I think most customers realize when their balance shows $924 million, they think it’s probably not their money,” he said.
