Southern Section Softball Semifinals : TODAY’S GAMES
DIVISION I Camarillo (23-2-1) vs. Foothill (29-2), Orange Coast College, 3:15 p.m.
Foothill has beaten Mater Dei, ostensibly the other best team in the Division I playoffs, and swept two games apiece against Woodbridge, the best team in Division II, and Upland, the best team in Division III. But in Camarillo, the Knights face a team that beat Pacifica in the quarterfinals. Pacifica is the only county team to beat Foothill.
Mater Dei (28-1) vs. Canyon (22-10), Cypress College, 3:15 p.m.
Canyon isn’t supposed to be here, but the Comanches upset third-seeded Newbury Park, 1-0, with an opportunistic effort--three of their four hits were in the first inning. They’ll again need to play error-free defense to score the upset here. Mater Dei is coming off a perfect-game performance by Marissa Young, who has thrown 21 innings without giving up a hit.
DIVISION II
Santa Maria Righetti (25-6) vs. Woodbridge (27-5), Harvard Park, 3:15 p.m.
Christy Robitaille has 18 shutouts for the top-seeded defending champions. Coach Alan Dugard said the Warriors’ 4-0 victory over La Crescenta Crescenta Valley was under the most “hostile” of conditions. Woodbridge has outscored playoff opponents, 13-1. Righetti, with a 4-1 scoring edge, doesn’t get any help in the travel department.
Other game
La Mirada (24-2-1) vs. Saugus (25-4), William S. Hart Pony League Complex, Santa Clarita, 3:15 p.m.
DIVISION III
Upland (25-4) vs. Brea Olinda (21-7), Tamarack Park, 3:15 p.m.
After a 2-1, nine-inning victory over Glendora, Brea Olinda has scored 13-1 and 4-0 victories, but this is its first opponent that was actually expected to win a playoff game. Geney Orris has been solid in the circle and at the plate, but top-seeded [and defending champion] Upland has one of the better pitchers around in Sarah Farnworth.
Other game
Whittier La Serna (26-1-1) vs. Glendora St. Lucy’s (24-4), University of La Verne, 3:15 p.m.
