Intermediate School Paper Wins Award
Tiger Tale, the student newspaper at MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School, was the only junior high paper in the country to earn a top award from New York-based American Scholastic Press Assn., journalism advisor Lenard Davis said Tuesday.
The four-page student newspaper with general information about the school and its sports teams includes black-and-white photos and an advice columnist.
Davis said the paper, continuously published since 1982, earned 966 points out of a possible 1,000 for overall excellence.
The paper was one of about two dozen to win a silver crown, which is given to the top 2% to 3% of papers that enter the competition sponsored by Columbia University, Davis said. A gold crown is given to the top 1%.
The newspaper, named for the school’s mascot, also has won county and state awards.
“In sports, you have football heroes winning all these trophies,” Davis said. “I think it’s nice that academic-minded kids get awards too.”
