A class of third-graders from Carpenter Avenue Elementary School in Studio City raised a cool grand--as in, $1,000--for TreePeople, a nonprofit environmental organization, by selling bags of popcorn during recess.

The youngsters will donate the money to TreePeople today.

Lydia Friedlich’s class got the idea after participating in TreePeople’s environmental education programs, which included planting trees on the school’s campus, participating in environmental awareness assemblies and touring TreePeople’s headquarters in Coldwater Canyon Park.

Friedlich said the kids ran the popcorn venture “like real entrepreneurs,” selling three different varieties of popcorn for 50 to 75 cents each during recess periods. The students learned to make change and even made bank deposits, the teacher said.

Students were asked to compose essays about their undertaking.

The 33-member class will present the check to TreePeople Development Director Diane Hunt at 9 a.m. Each student will receive a certificate of appreciation.
