City OKs Park Over Neighbors’ Protests

Despite weeks of protests from neighbors, the City Council recently approved a $526,000 contract to build Clipper Cove Park.

The council made a few minor adjustments to address concerns over traffic and lighting. But it left the major features of the park plans intact.

Neighbors called for elimination of several light poles, a picnic shelter designed to accommodate about 20 people, and at least one of two planned playground areas.

The council decided against eliminating any of those, saying that the park, which will have no facilities for games such as basketball or soccer, already would be one of the city’s quietest.

The council did make some concessions to the residents.

The park’s open, grassy area will have several mounds to discourage sports play. Light poles will be reduced in height from 15 feet to 10 feet, and several small trees will be relocated so they don’t block homeowners’ views when fully grown.

The 4.9-acre park will be off Alicia Parkway between Niguel and Aliso Creek roads.
