Trustees to Vote on U.S. Aid Applications
The school board is expected to seek federal grants for career development and bilingual education programs tonight.
Although trustees of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District are expected to approve the applications totaling $412,000, board member Wendy Leece said she will object to taking money from the federal government.
But other board members said they will vote in favor of sending the grant application to Washington because the programs benefit most of the students who participate.
“If we refuse that money, it is money that is not going to our kids,” Trustee Jim Ferryman said. “I would hate to see those programs go away, because there is no funding to replace them.”
Leece, who last year proposed dismantling a lunch program financed by the federal government, said she has prepared a 15-minute presentation that she will give at the meeting outlining her objections.
