About the Balloting

Key facts on Russia’s presidential election, to be held Sunday.

* Term: Four years; limited to two consecutive terms.

* Powers: Serves as head of state, commander-in-chief; holds codes for Russia’s nuclear weapons; has some legislative powers; must suspend or cancel membership in any political party while in office.

* Candidate: Must be a Russian citizen at least 35 years old, full-time resident in Russia for at least 10 years.

* Number of voters: 105 million (Voting age is 18.)

* Polling stations: 93,000

THE PROCESS

Polls open at 8 a.m. (9 p.m. Saturday Pacific time)

Each voter receives a single ballot paper listing candidates in alphabetical order. A final option allows an individual to vote “against all candidates.”

Partial preliminary results after the last polls close, (11 a.m. Pacific time). If no candidate receives 50% of vote, a runoff will be held next month.
