Having Two Lines Isn’t a Waste
Remember this number: (888) CLEAN-LA.
That’s the toll-free hotline Los Angeles County has chosen to kick off its summer environmental push. Residents can call the number 24 hours a day to get detailed information (in English or Spanish) on recycling, paint disposal, motor oil recycling and household hazardous waste roundup schedules.
The focus of this campaign is household wastes such as pesticides, cleaners, paints and motor oil. “Most people are aware of recycling now, but they don’t realize we have regular schedules of waste roundups and the Hazmobile program,” said Stephen Groner, an environmental program manager in the Department of Public Works.
That information was available on the county’s old hotline: (800) 552-5218. But the key to environmental success is user-friendliness and that means a catchy phrase, Groner said.
The 800 numbers were all used up, so the department had to move to a 888 toll-free number, which will be publicized all summer. For backup, they are keeping the 800 number too.
