Educators to Raise Scholarship Funds
With home-cooked food and live entertainment, the Assn. of Mexican American Educators hopes to attract at least 200 people to its scholarship fund-raiser Saturday.
The scholarship fund was established to help Latino high school graduates and community college students pursue their college careers.
“We want to improve opportunities for students in our community,” said Pablo Rubio, a learning director at Frank Intermediate School in Oxnard and the association’s treasurer.
Students will be selected near the end of the 1996-97 school year based on a number of criteria, including economic need and academic achievement, for the scholarships, which range from $200 to $500, Rubio said.
At the fund-raiser, La Rondalla Inlakech and Conjunto Catemaco will serenade guests with Mexican boleros and jarochos--a music style originally from the Yucatan Peninsula. Home-cooked Mexican food will be served.
The fund-raiser will be held at 3625 Loma Vista Road, Ventura, from 4 to 9 p.m. The association is asking for benefit donations of $15 per person and $25 per couple.
Those interested should call 644-2558 or 984-2839, or write to AMEA, P.O. Box 566, Oxnard CA 93032.
