In Oakland, It’s Day of Milestones

It was a day of milestones for Mark McGwire and Alan Trammell. It was a day to remember for Bobby Higginson.

While McGwire hit his 300th homer and Trammell had his 1,000th run batted in, Higginson drove in a career-high five runs as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics, 10-8, Tuesday at Oakland.

Detroit won for the fourth time in five games as Mark Lewis added three RBIs with a double, single and bases-loaded walk. Cecil Fielder had a solo homer, his 18th.

Higginson had a two-run double in the Tigers’ four-run second inning and hit his 11th home run leading off the fifth. He added a two-run double in a four-run seventh.

McGwire, who came up with the A’s in 1986, became the 73rd player in major-league history--and the 10th active player--to reach 300 home runs when he hit a pair of solo shots. He has 24 this season.

Trammell became the 10th player in Detroit history to reach 1,000 RBIs when he drove in a run on an infield single in the second.

Cleveland 4, Boston 0--Orel Hershiser pitched seven shutout innings at Boston as the Indians recorded their 14th consecutive victory over the Red Sox.

Eddie Murray and Manny Ramirez hit consecutive home runs and Jim Thome also homered as Cleveland snapped a four-game losing streak.

Hershiser (8-4) struck out two and walked one--getting 15 of his 21 outs on ground balls--before Paul Shuey completed the shutout. Tom Gordon (5-4) matched Hershiser through 5 2/3 innings before giving up the back-to-back solo homers.

Milwaukee 5, Kansas City 3--Greg Vaughn hit his 22nd home run and the Brewers homered in their 14th consecutive game.

Vaughn connected for the seventh time this season against the Royals, homering into the water fountains in left field in the second inning. He has 70 RBIs in 74 games, putting him far ahead of Cecil Cooper’s team-record pace of 126 in 1983.

Milwaukee has won all five games played in Kansas City this season.

Minnesota 6-2, New York 1-6--The Yankees, held to one run in the previous two games, got three hits and three RBIs from Bernie Williams to salvage a doubleheader split with the Twins at Minneapolis.

Frank Rodriguez and three relievers limited the Yankees to five hits in the Twins’ victory in the opener.

Williams, who homered for New York’s only run in the first game, went three for five with another homer in the second game. His run-scoring double gave the Yankees a 4-2 lead in the fifth.

Texas 5, Baltimore 2--Ivan Rodriguez hit two home runs for the Rangers at Arlington, Texas.

Brady Anderson hit his 26th homer, most in the majors, for the Orioles. But Baltimore lost for the ninth time in 12 games against Texas this season.

Kevin Gross (8-5) pitched 8 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits and one walk while striking out five.

Toronto 8, Seattle 7--Jacob Brumfield’s two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Blue Jays the victory at Toronto.

Norm Charlton (2-2) walked Tomas Perez with one out before Brumfield lined the next pitch over the left-field fence for Toronto’s 20th come-from-behind victory of the season.
