Branching Out

Long known for the tamales and other Mexican fare served up at their seaside eatery, Joanna and Delfino Lopez-Rojas have expanded their horizons, opening an import store on Ventura’s Main Street (D7C). . . . The new establishment’s ambience suits nearby merchants just fine. “We’re looking for upscale stores that lend a flavor to our neighborhood,” said Audrey Gaffney, owner of a chocolate shop two doors away.

Moving Ahead

Camarillo planners tonight are expected to give a preliminary go-ahead to plans for Sportsplex, a 75-acre athletic-training center and ice-skating rink (B1). . . . One of several sports-related proposals in the county, Sportsplex would also include a health and fitness facility, shops, restaurants, a skateboard park and an arena that could seat thousands.

Close to Home

Roseanne Cash, Johnny’s daughter, grew up in Ventura after her parents’ divorce. The 41-year-old singer and mother of three is now living in New York with her family, after a stop in Nashville, but she’s back in Southern California this week for several concerts (F1). . . . Cash says her music’s no longer straight country but a “hybrid kind of mix.” Cash is also an author--her book of short stories was published earlier this year.

Change of Heart

Shortly after her husband was killed by a fellow Oxnard police officer during a botched drug raid, Jennifer Jensen said she blamed no one. . . . But on Monday, her attorney notified the city that she intends to file suit (B1). “Our goal is justice for the Jensen family and to make this [raid] an example of what not to do,” attorney Edward Steinbrecher said.
