South Korea Capitalizes on Penalty, Ties Britain

Park Shin-He converted a penalty stroke with 2:54 remaining to give South Korea a 2-2 draw with Great Britain in the men’s field hockey opener for both.

The penalty was awarded after British goalkeeper Simon Mason was called for stick-checking and pulling down Korean forward Kang Keon-Wook just inside the circle.

Calum Giles had given Britain the lead in the 50th minute, coming off the bench for a second time to convert off a penalty corner from Jon Wyatt.

In other men’s games, the Netherlands defeated Malaysia, 2-0; Germany beat Spain, 2-1, and South Africa and Australia played to a 1-1 draw.

In the women’s competition, Vanessa Van Kooperen-Schmoranzer scored her second goal in as many games, off a deflection in the 50th minute, giving Germany a 2-1 victory over Spain.

Britain and the Netherlands played to a 1-1 draw in the other match.
