NEW YORK — A mother sobbed uncontrollably as she was sentenced to 15 years to life for murdering her 6-year-old daughter.
Awilda Lopez, 29, admitted that after abusing Elisa Izquierdo for months, she knocked her against a concrete wall on Nov. 20. Authorities pronounced the child dead when they found her scarred and bruised body two days later.
Lopez, sentenced Wednesday, had pleaded guilty June 24. The case led state lawmakers to pass “Elisa’s Law,” designed to eliminate confidentiality rules that hamper oversight of abuse cases.
