BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : Erstad Could Go Down to Triple-A

Rookie outfielder Darin Erstad, who hit .333 in his first 28 games with the Angels but has struggled in recent weeks, could be headed back to triple-A Vancouver soon.

Unable to swing a deal involving Garret Anderson before Wednesday night’s trading deadline, General Manager Bill Bavasi said he would reevaluate team’s four-outfielder rotation, which several outfielders don’t seem to be too happy with.

Erstad, who has five hits in his last 42 at-bats, his average dipping to .277, did not start any of the Angels’ three games in Detroit.

Highly touted catcher Todd Greene made his first Angel start Thursday and hit his first major league home run, a two-run shot to left-center field in the seventh inning.

The frenetic pace set of Detroit General Manager Randy Smith, who traded Cecil Fielder to the Yankees for two players, Chad Curtis to the Dodgers for two players and Greg Gohr to the Angels for one player Wednesday night, apparently continued on his drive home from Tiger Stadium.

Smith got a speeding ticket.

Jeff Schmidt, a reliever who went 2-0 with a 7.88 ERA in nine games, was optioned to triple-A Vancouver to make room for pitcher Gohr on the 25-man roster.
