Aarones Leads Norway to Bronze

Norway’s Ann Kristin Aarones was shut down by the United States in the semifinals, but the midfielder scored both goals Thursday in a 2-0 victory over Brazil in the bronze-medal game of the first Olympic women’s soccer tournament.

“We were disappointed to lose to the United States,” Aarones said. “But I decided I must give it my all in this match.”

Norway put it away in a four-minute stretch in the first half on the two goals by Aarones.

Her first goal, in the 21st minute, came after Brazilian defender Elane, on the back line, whiffed on her attempt to clear the ball. Linda Medalen stole it, and Brazil’s goalkeeper, Meg, came out to challenge her and forced Medalen to the right.

But two Brazilian defenders went to cover the net, leaving Aarones wide open in front. Aarones, inside the goal area, took the pass from Medalen and punched it in down low on the left side.

Aarones’ second goal was a beautiful lob from about 18 yards off a through ball from Trine Tangeraas in the 25th minute.
