Ministry Plans 10th Anniversary Services

After hearing the same desperate pleas again and again, the Rev. Alicia Broadous-Duncan knew she had to do something.

Substance abusers and their families had approached her repeatedly, searching for help in their battles against drugs and alcohol. So in 1986, Broadous-Duncan gathered a circle of family and friends and together they prayed.

“We sought God for a name and how we should start the ministry and what we should do,” she said.

After that discussion--and much more prayer--Broadous and the others founded Adonai Covenant Ministries in the northeast San Fernando Valley. The outreach ministry is dedicated to helping individuals fulfill their personal potential by applying the gospel to their daily lives.

“We counsel with substance abusers and their families,” Broadous-Duncan said. “We have nurturing sessions with individuals, families, groups, whatever it takes to get a person on their way.”

Next week, Adonai will celebrate its 10-year anniversary with a series of praise and worship services at the Burbank Airport Hilton Hotel. Free to the public, the workshops and worship services will begin at 3:30 p.m. Sunday and run through Wednesday night.

Those attending will include many “whose lives have been touched by the ministry,” Broadous-Duncan said. She said many would be traveling from across the country.

Over the years, Adonai has also taken its message to young people, recognizing the impact substance abuse has on children. The ministry holds weekly worship services at Hathaway Children’s Village and at Mid Valley Youth Center.

“My mission statement is nurturing persons to realize their full worth and assisting them in developing and attaining their full potential in Christ Jesus,” Broadous-Duncan said.

“With young people, it’s . . .letting them know that God loves them and wants them to have the best and be the best.”

Teaching people to pray is a strong component of the ministry.

Other services of the ministry include helping smaller churches, that often lack resources, with administration and the planning of workshops and other events.
