Bouvard profiles 16 exceptional women working to extend both women’s rights and human rights. Her subjects range from Chinese dissident Dai Qing to Juana Beatrice Gutierrez, one of the founders of the neighborhood activists Mothers of East Los Angeles. Bouvard weakens an otherwise interesting book by failing to explain the criteria she used to select her subjects: Why she included Annette Lu Hsu-Lien (Taiwan) and Navanethem Pillay (South Africa) but overlooked Aung San Soo Chi (Myanmar) and Wangari Maathai (Kenya).
