Ship Plans Cruise After Fire Fatal to 5
Operators of the cruise ship struck by a fatal fire on July 27 plan to have the ship repaired and cruising again beginning Aug. 13.
The 617-foot Universe Explorer was cruising Alaska’s Inland Passage when a laundry room fire killed five crew members and injured 76 people, including 13 of its 730 passengers. The ship’s operator, World Explorer Cruises of San Francisco, canceled the cruise and sent the passengers home by plane.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the ship failed two fire drills in Juneau, Alaska, where it docked after the fire, and was not allowed to leave for repairs in Vancouver, Canada, until it passed a third test.
A spokesman for World Explorer Cruises said that following the repairs, the Universe Explorer will leave on a scheduled two-week Alaska cruise Aug. 13.
