Blaze Damages Historic Hangar
A plastics company and a historic airplane hangar once owned by Howard Hughes were heavily damaged this weekend in a blaze at a Glendale industrial park, fire officials said.
The fire broke out at about 11:12 p.m. Saturday at Pacific Plastic Design at 905 Air Way, a Glendale fire official said. After firefighters arrived, the blaze quickly spread to an adjoining building, which was formerly owned by Hughes.
“The owners had just been notified it was a historic building,” said Dave Starr, fire marshal for the Glendale Fire Department.
Eighty firefighters from the cities of Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena extinguished the fire Sunday morning at 3:52 a.m. Nobody was injured, but the fire caused an estimated $2.5 million in damage and left 20 people unemployed.
A nearby carpet company also sustained an unknown amount of water damage. The fire briefly ignited again shortly after daylight but was quickly contained.
The cause of the fire, which temporarily disrupted Metrolink service, was under investigation Sunday.
“At this time I would say it is suspicious,” Starr said.
