Floods spawned by torrential rains in southeast China have killed at least 233 people and left 284 missing in the last two days, officials said today.

More than 100,000 people were left homeless after the floods battered 97 townships in coastal Fujian province and swept away more than 70,000 houses, an official of the Fujian Anti-Flood Headquarters said by telephone.

The official said hundreds of People’s Liberation Army troops and paramilitary police rushed to the flooded areas to search for the missing and to help with emergency rescue work.

The latest casualties raised to more than 2,300 the death toll from floods and storms across a large swath of southern and central China in recent weeks.
