Wallach Will Be Added to Roster Soon

The Dodgers are expected to add veteran third baseman Tim Wallach to their roster within the next 48 hours.

Wallach, 38, who has been on this trip with the Dodgers while recovering from a broken rib, is expected to provide some leadership.

But that alone, said Vice President Fred Claire, would not be enough.

“If Tim didn’t think he could contribute beyond his leadership ability,” Claire said, “he wouldn’t want to be here. He adds a lot because of his ability and his leadership ability.”

To make room for him on the roster, someone will have to be removed, probably third baseman Mike Busch or outfielder Rick Parker.

Also expected to rejoin the Dodgers today or Monday is pitcher Tom Candiotti, who is recovering from an arm injury suffered last month. Candiotti made two rehabilitation starts for Class-A San Bernardino.

The Dodgers may be playing in the final series at Riverfront Stadium. It’s not that the stadium is disappearing, only the name.

Negotiations are under way between officials of Hamilton County, owners of the stadium, and the Cinergy Corp. gas and electric company to change the name of the structure to Cinergy Field.

Biggest advantage: People will no longer confuse it with Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers Stadium.

Cincinnati owner Marge Schott is finally allowed back into her offices at Riverfront Stadium.

Schott was banned on July 17 by National League President Leonard Coleman after she threatened to defy an order to relinquish day-to-day control of the team, an order issued after Schott made a favorable remark about Adolf Hitler on a national telecast.

When Schott named Red executive John Allen the team’s new chief executive officer on Friday, Coleman lifted the ban on Schott.
